(Procjsmetady) International Fine Art Workshop and Exhibition
The Gallery at Norwich University College of The Arts

‘Invasion Occupation Transformation’ project is a continuation of an International project ‘Why Are We Here – ‘Procjsmetady’ led by Jan Mladovsky and involving FA NUCA and the three other European art schools, Munich Art Academy, Prague Art Academy, Liberec University, Fine Art Faculty. The project began in November 2007 by a two week workshop in Liberec Fine Art Faculty, followed by an exhibition at The Skolska 28 Gallery in Prague and in February 2008 by a workshop in Munich followed by a four week exhibition at The Pasinger Fabrik Gallery in Munich.

“The ways in which social agency can be invested in art, or can emanate from art, are exceedingly diverse...”

Exploring the proposition that art can be transformation and transformation can be art, an idea taken from Alfred Gell's text, 'Art and Agency', this project will become a vehicle for action, ready to take on the opportunity to challenge our preconceptions about the shape of art. Gell suggests that we should let visual art objects retain their value by speaking without the need for symbol or meaning, and that agency, intention, causation, result and transformation are where the emphasis should be placed in art making.

“Using language, we can talk about objects and attribute 'meaning's' to them in the sense of 'find something alternative to say about them' but visual art objects are not part of language for this reason, nor do they constitute an alternative language.”

Proposals

Collaborative Workshop: Invitation to occupy the galley space for period of 2 weeks, sharing the space with others to transform ideas into physical works. OPEN TO ALL!

Impulse Response Project: One week project inviting artists to respond to an impulse task given by Gallery space. OPEN TO ALL!

Julie Savoye: Highlighting a space that is uninhabitable. The manufacturing of an occupied space sculpture.

Kaitlin Ferguson and Dan Rojano: Transforming found objects to suit the theme of invasion, occupation, transformation.

Holly Goldberg: Performance piece entailing the collection of collaborative life memories.

Pedro lopez: Continuation of 'Touch and be touched' project; a workshop based artwork involving discussion of related social topics during several days.

Charlie Audsley and Steve Draycott: Exercise performance event involving audience participation and exploring social engagement within the art world.

Jan Mladovsky: Obscura installation/performance inviting the audience to interact with public space; forming a projection that occupies and transforms it's internal and external environments.

Catherine Johnson and James Chincharo: Collaborative Light Installtion using reflective material to transform internal space.

Impulse Response

Impulse Response

Take part in the Invasion Occupation Transformation exhibition!
5th - 9th May

I will provide you with an Impulse specification or task and a short deadline in which to respond to and complete work for the project. Also during the show you may take an Impulse to make work in response to on the spot or leave your own Impulse for others.

You will transform these arbitrary tasks into artworks, adapting the outcome to your own intentions.

Key requirements on submissions for this show:
Time limit – work is to be submitted to the space from the 5th - 9th May. You may start as soon as you receive your Impulse.
Work must be ready to install in the Gallery.
